"The psychological phenomenon where people copy the actions of others to attempt to undertake correct behavior."

In social dynamics, social proof is high value. If you are seen having a good time with friends, or being greeted warmly by the bartender, strangers will assume you are "high status" and will be more open to meeting you. It is "pre-selection" in action.
